Your text is never sent and never saved

People paste real writing into a counter: a dissertation chapter, a cover letter naming the firm they are applying to, an article under embargo, copy written for a client who has not seen it yet. That is the whole reason this page has to be careful, so here is the plain position — the words you paste stay inside the browser tab you paste them into.

Counting is done by a small script that the page already loaded. It reads the value of the text box, totals it, and writes numbers into the boxes underneath. There is no request behind that, no server on the other end waiting for a paragraph, and therefore no upload, no queue, no processing log and no cached copy. We never receive your draft, which means we cannot read it, keep it, hand it over or lose it.

Nothing is written on your side either. The text is not put in local storage, session storage, IndexedDB or a cookie — it exists only in the memory of the open tab, and it goes when the tab does. Copy anything you care about before you close it.

That is a genuine trade-off and worth saying flatly: there is no autosave. Because nothing is stored, a reload can lose what is in the box. Browsers do their own form restoration on a back or forward step, and sometimes on a soft refresh, so the text occasionally survives — that is your browser's behaviour, not a feature of this site, and it is not something to rely on. For a long piece, write it where you normally write and paste in a copy to be counted.

You can check every claim above in about thirty seconds: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network panel, paste several pages of text, and watch that nothing is requested. Then look at Application, Local Storage — the only key belonging to this site is the consent answer described below.

What the server sees

Delivering this page is still a request over the internet, so our hosting provider records what any web server records: the IP address the request came from, the file asked for, the time, the user-agent string and the referring page. Those access logs exist for security and for a rough sense of how busy the site is, they are held briefly by the host, and we make no attempt to tie them to a person. They describe a page being fetched — never the contents of your text box, which never travelled anywhere to be logged.

Cookies and analytics

This site sets no cookies of its own and runs no analytics script — no page-view counter, no session recorder, no heatmap, no tag manager. One value is kept in local storage: the answer you gave the cookie-consent banner, stored so the banner does not reappear on every visit. Clearing your browser storage for this site removes it and the banner asks again.

Advertising (planned)

Hosting costs money and this tool is free, so the intention is to carry advertising here, most likely Google AdSense. When that starts, the ad network serves its content from its own servers and may set cookies or comparable identifiers in your browser to measure how the ads perform and — subject to where you are and what you have consented to — to personalise which ones you see. Third-party vendors including Google use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's own switch for personalised advertising sits in Google Ads Settings, and the industry-wide opt-out covering other vendors is at aboutads.info/choices. In places where the law demands it — the GDPR and the ePrivacy rules across the EEA and the UK being the obvious examples — a consent banner asks first, and no non-essential cookie is set until you have answered it. The day an advert genuinely appears on this page, this section gains the details: which network, and which cookies.

None of that reaches your writing. An advertiser gets a slot in the layout; it does not get the text box. Your draft is still counted in the tab and still never leaves the device.

Children

This site is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your rights

We hold no account, no profile and no copy of anything you have written, so in the ordinary case there is nothing for us to export, correct or erase. If you think we hold information about you, or you have a question about the host's access logs, write to us and you will get an answer within 30 days.

Changes

Any material change to this policy — advertising going live being the obvious one — comes with a new date at the top of the page. Using the site once that date has moved counts as accepting the version then published.
