When a count looks wrong

Almost every reported miscount is a definition disagreement rather than arithmetic, and the fastest way to settle it is a sample. Please send:

A short piece of the exact text that reproduces it — a sentence or two is usually plenty, and it has to be the real characters, not a description of them. Curly quotes, non-breaking spaces, soft hyphens and a stray zero-width character all change the answer and none of them are visible when they are paraphrased.
Which figure is off — words, characters, sentences, paragraphs or a time estimate.
The number this page gave, the number you expected, and where the expected number came from (Word, Google Docs, a submission portal, a marker's brief).
Your browser and version, and whether you are on desktop or mobile.

Paste the sample straight into the body of the email rather than attaching a document — an attachment often normalises the very characters that caused the problem. If the text is confidential, cut it down to a fragment that still misbehaves, or replace the words with others of the same shape and punctuation. Nothing on the site collects your text, so a sample only exists if you choose to send one, and it is used to reproduce the bug and then deleted.

Feature requests

Reasonable and on the list: per-line and per-selection counts, a longest-word and average-sentence-length view, and more limit presets for the places people actually paste. Not on the list: grammar checking, keyword density and readability scoring, which are explained on the about page, and anything at all that would involve sending your draft to a server.
